FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This page brings together common enquiries we receive about researching family military history and contacting regimental museums. Whether you’re searching for a relative’s service records, identifying a regiment, or seeking details about museum visits and donations, the information below offers a helpful starting point.

We hope this page helps support your research journey. For anything not covered here, please get in touch via the Contact Us page.

Family History Research

If you know the person’s full name, date of birth, and service number, you can request a copy of their service record via the Gov UK Website.

These records usually provide the best starting point for further research.

If the regiment still exists independently and has a museum in our network, you can contact them directly using our Museums Directory.

They may be able to share information about postings, activities, or photographs.

Please note that some museums charge research fees, while others answer basic enquiries for free (though donations are always appreciated).

When a regiment is amalgamated, it means it has been merged with another regiment to form a new one.

This often happens during army reorganisations. You can use our Regimental Succession Documents to trace which regiments combined and what their successor regiment is today.

You can check our Regimental Succession Documents to find out which regiment it became part of.

Once identified, contact the successor regiment’s museum via our Museums Directory (for example, the Glider Pilot Regiment amalgamated into the Army Air Corps, whose museum is the Army Flying Museum).

Please note that some museums charge research fees, while others answer basic enquiries for free (though donations are always appreciated).
