The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum reflects on the success of their grant project.
We have used the grant to support our temporary exhibitions and family visits to the museum by creating a workshop which focuses on iPads and using digital sketchbooks and messy art.
The first main activity within the workshop is ‘Please touch the exhibits’ which allows and enables younger people to become more involved with our exhibition spaces.
Students on self-guided visits are encouraged to take images, record interviews, carry out presentations, create vlogs which they can share with us. This has been trialled with several visiting groups and feedback has been positive especially with older children (12 years plus).
We have used simple free apps Pic Collage, Brushes 3 and 123D Catch. These free apps are ideal because they offer a range of opportunities, including sketchbook research, collage, photography, drawing and painting, and 3D modelling.
Going forward we will try and find sponsors for museum iPads so we are able to provide these loaded up with the workshops for a more relaxed family visit to the museum and our art collection.
