Reimagining our Regiment’s post Second World War World
A reflection of the success of their grant project.
National Service
The Museum volunteers have been working hard to research and install displays focused on the Staffordshire Regiment’s post-Second World War history. The first display that has been completed focuses on National Service which was introduced in 1949 and continued until 1960 when final call-ups ended (the last servicemen were discharged in 1963). The display features equipment and kit used by men that served with the North and South Staffordshire Regiments for one or two years during that period, including kit bag, button cleaner (brass button stick), boot polish, .303 ammunition box, and turtle helmet (British Mk IV steel helmet).
Operation Banner: 1969 – 2007
To improve the existing information on service in Northern Ireland, Museum volunteers have selected a range of historic collections to share on public display. Two of the Museum’s volunteers who served with the Staffordshire Regiment and were stationed in Northern Ireland from 1979 to 1981 and between 1988 to 1990, have taken the lead on the project and provided details on their experiences and how equipment was used.
The National Service display can be viewed now, and the Op Banner display will be available before the end of February.
