About This Museum

The displays, which are housed in Nottingham Castle, cover the history of the Infantry Regiments and Soldiers of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire from 1741 right up to the present day. Our history covers the Sherwood Foreseters, The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foreseters and The Mercian Regiment. Highlights of the gallery include a range of interactives, a rolling programme of the Temporary Exhibitions, 11 Victoria Crosses and a display about the history of the Regiment’s Mascot, Private Derby.

The Archives are held separately at Foresters House, Chilwell and are accesssible by appointment only on 0115 946 5415. Written and telephone enquiries are welcomed and enquiries can also be submitted from our website.

We also have a display in the Soldier’s Story Gallery in Derby City Museum and Art Gallery shared with the 9th/12th Royal Lancers and the Derbyshire Yeomanry.

Visiting Advice

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Nottingham Castle's redevelopment, our gallery within Nottingham Castle is now closed until 2020. We have a display in Mansfield Museum, titled 'Remembering the end of WW1: Museum of the Mercian Regiment on tour, which is free to enter. All enquiries should be directed to our office in Chilwell.
