The Somerset Military Museum is housed within the Museum of Somerset at Taunton Castle. It tells the story of the regiments of Somerset in war and peacetime. The gallery introduces visitors to the wider background of the formation and development of Somerset’s regiments, and explores why soldiers fight for their country. A comprehensive and well displayed collection covering the history of the County Regiments of Somerset from 1685. The coverage of The Somerset Light Infantry including the First Afghan war, including the Siege of Jellalabad, and the medal display are of particular note.
The regimental archives of the Somerset Light Infantry, as well as some North and West Somerset Yeomanry records, are held at the Somerset Heritage Centre. Archive material may be viewed by appointment.
